Setting Effective Goals for a Successful Employee Wellness Strategy

When an employee wellness strategy isn’t working as planned, it’s important to go back to the basics and look at the expectations on both sides. Employees want to improve their health and lives in ways that matter to them, not to someone else’s idea of what and who they should be. On the employer side, organizations are seeking to provide the right tools and resources to motivate their employees to become their best possible selves AND bring those best selves to work every day. 

And guess what? Those goals can be easily aligned and reached, so that both employees and employers can achieve success. As has been established by Edward Deci and Richard Ryan in what’s known as Self-Determination Theory, there are three basic psychological needs for creating change: autonomy, competence and relatedness. Essentially, when people feel in control, competent and that their needs are appreciated and understood, they can more easily move toward creating lasting, positive change.

With that in mind, reflect on your core strategy and see what’s missing. The fastest, most effective way to bring all three of these basic needs into your program is to incorporate certified coaching. That’s it. You don’t need to revamp your program, goals, assessments, etc. Adding nationally certified and accredited wellness coaches to your program will pull all three needs into alignment by focusing on employees as individuals.
