Gloria Reading

A certified coach, Gloria Reading’s “other job” is teaching pre-service teachers at a major Midwestern university. Although not part of her “job description,” she often finds herself “coaching” students and colleagues. Without question, those are the professional/personal opportunities from which she thrives. To her, investing both her heart and her time supporting others as they learn to live independently, become professionals, manage stress, organize time, deal with transition, and develop relationships is one of the most satisfying parts of teaching. Because she is frequently challenged by managing stress healthfully and creatively, she wrote her doctoral dissertation on stress in the workplace. Through that experience, Gloria became a strong advocate for balancing the spiritual (meditation, reflection), the intellectual (reading, listening) and the physical (working out, eating well) as essential habits one must develop to be healthy and whole. Not surprisingly, her favorite metaphor for life is that life is a school in which we each have an individualized “curriculum” providing us opportunities, if we take them, to mature, grow and gain wisdom. This individualized “curriculum” provides life “experiences” which are sometimes enormously joyful and sometimes excruciatingly painful but always offer opportunities to live a deeper and more fulfilling life. Favorite authors whose writings have influenced her include Stephen Covey, Parker Palmer and Doug Silsbee.

Iva Hackwell portrait
Iva Hackwell

Iva Hackwell is descended from Wyoming pioneer settlers, but she and her two sons now call California home. Iva has been a jitterbug since she first learned to walk, and although she was a gymnast in high school and as an adult competed in league tennis, Iva is happiest when dancing, whether it’s Latin, ballet, jazz, or hip-hop. Iva has years of experience teaching English at the college level, a profession which is unavoidably sedentary. She has observed and also experienced first-hand the fallout of failing to exercise: weight gain, joint pain, and general lethargy. A determined and steady commitment to a healthier life has led her to balance sitting with activity, reminding her to make time for dance class and weekly walks. She also travels extensively and sees every venture as an opportunity for movement, whether it’s learning to ride English saddle in Chile, experiencing tennis on the lawn in England, or hiking in the forests of Norway.

Growing up, Iva was fortunate enough to have a mother who emphasized eating right, sleeping enough, and getting off the sofa, out the door, and on with life. Over the years, Iva has come to realize she was given all the tools for a healthy adulthood, because there is no magic when it comes to wellness. Every day is a step along the journey to achieving and holding on to the person we want to be. It is within our ability to make the healthy choices, and it doesn’t require denial or sacrifice. It’s about embracing the reality of us as our best selves, healthy and strong.

Barbra is a Personal Trainer (NSCA-CPT) and Sports Nutritionist (NASN) and knows well that exercise and healthy eating are needed to maintain her health and enhance her quality of life. She believes that health is one of life’s greatest gifts and that life is short, therefore a healthy life is a priority for her! She would rather spend time exercising than spend time being sick. Barbra has always enjoyed getting outside and being active. Since living in Colorado she especially enjoys trail running along with hiking, skiing, biking, weight training and yoga. After the birth of her 2 kids she realized the benefits of weight training and how great it feels to have a strong body! She is hooked on weight training and has found the strength gains make all of her outdoor activities more enjoyable (and eliminated her knee pain with distance running). Even though she has been running most of her life, just last year she participated in her first actual road races. This year she is planning on her first Marathon.
